Mission agency makes King 50th a focus
ATLANTA (UMNS) — Through site visits, drama and worship, directors and staff of the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries observed the 50th anniversary of the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. The board celebrated the Atlanta native’s life and witness and remembered the mission agency’s “ongoing civil rights pilgrimage and commitment.” Linda Bloom reports.

When was The United Methodist Church created?
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (InfoServ) — The latest installment of Ask the UMC takes a look back at the creation of The United Methodist Church on April 23, 1968, as the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church joined to form a new denomination. Uniting the two churches had been in the making for more than 10 years, according to InfoServ, a ministry of United Methodist Communications.

Congo city, rural churches build 'friendship'
KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of Congo (UMNS) — Members of United Methodist International English Church here felt called to help a neighboring rural church with a new chapel and other needs. “We must not always wait for or seek a partnership with sister churches from the United States of America, Europe or Asia. It is time for us to create partnerships between our churches in different districts or annual conferences,” said the Rev. Desire Tiriwepi. Pierre T. Omadjela has the story.

Desert Southwest Conference
Former camping director sentenced
PHOENIX — The former Desert Southwest conference director of Camping and Youth Ministry was sentenced to 11 years in prison on child pornography charges, Bishop Robert T. Hoshibata said in a statement. The bishop called for prayers for the victims, their families and for James Parkhurst. Parkhurst had earlier pleaded guilty to charges stemming from action in 2010 while he was visiting Colorado. “Although this news is unpleasant and painful, we provide this information for honesty and transparency, so you will know of the outcome of this tragic situation,” the bishop said.
