FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (UM News) — Health officials across Africa are struggling to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, despite lessons learned in the fight against Ebola. As with the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, they are striving to overcome public skepticism and other barriers, but they also are wiser. Phileas Jusu reports.

Outages hamper Hurricane Ida assessment
BATON ROUGE, La. — Much of Louisiana is without power or cellphone service after Hurricane Ida, and Louisiana Conference officials said that has hampered efforts to assess storm damage, including to church buildings. “We give thanks for the first responders and those who are working so hard to restore power and communication channels,” said a conference Facebook post. UM News will be joining with the Louisiana Conference and others to share about Ida’s effects and response efforts.

Churchgoing radio personality dies at 81
BELMONT, N.C. — After retiring from the classroom, Louise “Wheezy” Holloway Glover found a second calling as a radio personality and then social media presence. It all began when she started reviewing “American Idol” during her daughter Ramona Holloway’s radio show. Glover, who died Aug. 24 at age 81, also was an active member of Simpson Gillespie United Methodist Church in Charlotte. QCity Metro has her obituary.
