Church members slain in Ethiopia

GAMBELLA, Ethiopia (UM News) — A $10,000 grant from the United Methodist Committee on Relief was announced July 11 after 37 people, including some United Methodists, were killed during an attack in Gambella in western Ethiopia. The UMCOR grant will provide food and hygiene kits and address other immediate needs of people affected by the civil unrest. Gad Maiga reports.

Oklahoma Conference
‘Lazarus Community’ makes a mark 

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Rev. Bo Ireland learned while taking city buses and walking city streets how to do effective ministry with those recovering from homelessness. He went from ministry pitch to ministry plant with the Lazarus Community, which is affiliated with Clark Memorial United Methodist Church and offers a range of practical help, including transitional housing units. Ireland draws on the New Monasticism for his approach. Alanna Ireland reports.

Louisiana Conference
Pastor honored by National Urban League
 
NEW ORLEANS — The Rev. Shawn Anglim was recently given a Gumbo Coalition Community Award by the National Urban League. He is founding pastor of First Grace United Methodist Church, the merger of a historically Black church and a historically Anglo church. He is also founding executive director of a nonprofit that operates a free legal clinic for immigrant children and a residence for women and children who had been unsheltered.

Church provides 30 quilts for Uvalde kids

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — The Craft and Quilting Ministry at City Road United Methodist Church recently crafted 30 handmade quilts for the schoolchildren of Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas. The church anointed the completed quilts and prayed over them at a recent worship service. The Daily Advance staff reports.

Groups push for leaders who advocate for accessibility

BALTIMORE — The United Methodist Congress of the Deaf and the United Methodist Association of Ministers with Disabilities have issued a joint statement regarding episcopal elections in November. The groups assert the need for episcopal candidates “who have demonstrated their willingness to be advocates for accessibility and the full inclusion of persons who live with any disability or who are Deaf, hard-of-hearing, late-deafened or Deafblind,” the statement reads.

People of faith mobilize around refugee crisis

WASHINGTON — On June 25, people gathered to celebrate the third annual One Journey Festival, which amplifies refugee voices and enhances public awareness of refugee talents and contributions. “Especially as people of faith, we strive to build enduring allies for refugees and use cultural and technological tools to facilitate human connections between refugees and their host communities,” writes the Rev. Neal Christie, executive minister of Connected Engagement for the Baltimore-Washington Conference.
