East Ohio adds dorm to Africa University campus

MUTARE, Zimbabwe (UM News) — Dozens of female students from across Africa will have safe and secure campus accommodations provided by the East Ohio Conference through the Teach-Reach-Bless campaign. A ceremony was held Feb. 26 to dedicate the new Bishop Tracy S. Malone Hall of Residence. Eveline Chikwanah reports.

Bishops call for cease-fire in Gaza

WASHINGTON — The United Methodist Council of Bishops on March 13 called for a cease-fire in the conflict between Hamas and Israel in Gaza and pledged its prayers and commitment to work for a durable peace for Israelis, Palestinians and all in the region. “The lack of a true cease-fire after more than five months of this deadly conflict compels us to raise our voices now,” the bishops said in their statement.

US Methodist bishops meet with pope

ROME — Pope Francis met a delegation of 10 bishops from the United States from three different Methodist churches on March 6. The bishops serve in The United Methodist Church, African Methodist Episcopal Church and the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church — all members of the World Methodist Council. The Rev. Matthew A. Baltimore-Washington Conference
Fresh Expressions field trip ignites imagination

FULTON, Md. — With a spirit of spiritual imagination, service and learning, 17 members of the Baltimore-Washington Conference’s Fresh Expressions Academy recently went on an immersion trip to Ocala, Florida, where they visited the ministries of the Rev. Michael Beck, who leads the denomination's Fresh Expressions ministries. Melissa Lauber has the story.

United Methodist joins panel on climate crisis
 
GENEVA — During a panel discussion at the March 5 meeting of three World Council of Churches commissions, speakers explored the theme “Climate emergency — churches responding in faith and hope.” Among the panelists was the Rev. Glen Chebon Kernell, a United Methodist elder in the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference and executive director of the Native American Comprehensive Plan. World Council of Churches staff report.

Origami sought for Middle East peace prayers

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — As a visual prayer for peace in Gaza and Israel, the West Virginia Conference Justice and Advocacy Team is asking for assistance in creating as many origami peace cranes as possible to hang during annual conference in June. Martha Hill reports.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Due to limited resources, UM News is switching to a four-days-a-week schedule with the Daily Digest. We no longer will provide a Digest on Thursdays except during special events such as General Conference or when there is breaking news that affects the denomination. Claremont moves to new campus

LOS ANGELES — The Claremont School of Theology community gathered Feb. 25 for “Reigniting Our Future” to kick off its next chapter at the school’s new Los Angeles campus at Westwood United Methodist Church. “We see Westwood as a strategic move,” said retired Bishop Grant Hagiya, Claremont president. Claremont is one of 13 U.S. United Methodist seminaries.
