The Advance at 70

ATLANTA — The tragic and confusing times following World War II called for extraordinary resolve and commitment. The Advance was established in 1948 to provide a channel of giving for Methodists to send aid and to help in reconstruction. Just as important were two other objectives: achieving a deeper understanding and commitment to faith and mission and offering a way for Methodists to “share in a ministry of relief and in carrying the Gospel of Christ to the peoples of the earth.” Christie R. Church helps runners in Boston Marathon

NEEDHAM, Mass. — If you’re a runner in need, Ashley Murphy will give you the socks off her feet — and all the sweatshirts and towels in her closet. During the dangerously cold Boston Marathon, she proved it. Beth DiCocco reports on the hospitality Murphy and other Carter Memorial United Methodist Church members extended during the race.

Church launches online Deaf ministry

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. — Epworth United Methodist Church here records its worship for online streaming. Now, the American Sign Language interpreter is the main focus with a picture-in-picture of the church service. This opens the possibility of worship for Deaf people around the world who do not have access to worship in their language.

Bishop's role: Keeper of stories
CHAPIN, S.C. — Retired United Methodist Bishop Ken Carder considers himself a keeper of stories, particularly those that he and his wife, Linda, have created in more than 56 years of marriage. Linda Carder, in the final stages of advanced dementia, is one of almost 90,000 people in South Carolina living  with Alzheimer's disease or related dementias.

Bishops remember notable theologian

CHICAGO — United Methodist bishops honored the legacy of the Rev. James Cone, an ordained African Methodist Episcopal pastor and the Bill and Judith Moyers Distinguished Professor of Systematic Theology at Union Theological Seminary. Cone died on April 28. The bishops sent a letter of condolence to Union in New York.
