Africa University 'prunes and grows' to stay afloat
MUTARE, Zimbabwe (UM News) — United Methodist Africa University continues to look for ways to save money as economic challenges plague the country. Outside the university, many in the church, including pastors, are turning to entrepreneurship as the job market worsens and prices skyrocket. Eveline Chikwanah and Chenayi Kumuterera report.

Costa Rican youth attend spiritual weekend

LA FORTUNA, Costa Rica — About 750 youth and young adults attended the Resurrection in Costa Rica weekend of music, preaching and worship. It was the first year for the event that the Holston Conference helped sponsor. Organizers say they want to double attendance in 2020. Annette Spence reports.

Building ramps for people in need

LYNCHBURG, S.C. — When Harry White learned one of his fellow church members could not go home from assisted living because the man couldn't get in the house in his wheelchair, he and other church members knew what had to be done. The result was a districtwide day of work to build needed ramps. Jessica Brodie has the story.

Church roof collapses

SAN ANTONIO — The roof of the youth building at historic Travis Park United Methodist Church collapsed on Oct. 24 after a severe thunderstorm, breaking a fire sprinkler line that caused flooding throughout the downtown church. No one was hurt, and the sanctuary's flooding was minor. Travis Park United Methodist is known for outreach to the homeless and asylum seekers. The church held its Oct. 27 worship service outside in Travis Park. Jackie Wang reports.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — United Methodist Communications and the UM News team will host the Pre-General Conference Briefing Jan. 23-24 at the Omni Hotel in Nashville in preparation for the 2020 General Conference. The briefing aims to help delegates, communicators, agency and annual conference staff and other interested parties prepare for the denomination's legislative body when it meets in Minneapolis May 5-15.
