Filipino United Methodists respond after storms

CABANATUAN CITY, Philippines (UMNS) — Coming to terms with the massive devastation brought by Super Typhoon Mangkhut, United Methodists in the Philippines are organizing and mobilizing to provide assistance to disaster-stricken communities. Those affected by an earlier tropical storm also are receiving aid. Gladys Mangiduyos reports.

South Carolina Conference
Teams begin disaster response in South Carolina

MARION, S.C. — Early Response Teams from the South Carolina Conference this week have begun assisting homeowners whose houses were flooded in the wake of Hurricane Florence. At least seven United Methodist churches in the Marion District have reported flood damage to their sanctuaries or other facilities. Dan O’Mara reports.

Bishop, United Methodists call for prayers, justice

CHICAGO — United Methodists were among more than 75 people gathered to worship and pray outside the Cook County Courts Building, calling for justice for Laquan McDonald as the murder trial of the police officer charged with shooting him entered its second week. Bishop Sally Dyck and United Methodist clergy and laity joined the Community Renewal Society at the Public Action in Worship event. The bishop also is calling for prayers for the city.

WINFIELD, Kan. — The Richard and Julia Wilke Institute for Discipleship has a new podcast that explores career, vocation and listening to God. Through recorded interviews, guests on “The Listening Chair” share how they live into the calling of being a beloved child of God, and how they live out this love through their vocational calling. The podcast is one of several programs and initiatives from the Institute for Discipleship that aim to help young people hear God’s voice and become stronger disciples.

Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center
Bridge over dam reopens
LAKE JUNALUSKA, N.C. — The bridge over the Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center dam is now open to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Donors, including the Western North Carolina Conference, helped contribute to the bridge’s restoration. A grand opening will be at 1 p.m. EDT Oct. 19.
