Bishop Harvey: ‘God will do a new thing’
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) — Many United Methodists feel anxiety as the denomination heads toward a special General Conference in 2019. Louisiana Area Bishop Cynthia Fierro Harvey, president-designate of the Council of Bishops, offers her thoughts on where we are as a church. Congo United Methodists seek to eradicate tribalism
KINDU, Congo (UMNS) — Tribalism is a daily reality in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, home to 80 million people and more than 300 tribes. Delegates and bishops from four episcopal areas gathered for a three-day workshop to combat tribalism, co-sponsored by the United Methodist Commission on Religion and Race. Oregon-Idaho Conference
Arrests during peaceful ICE protest

PORTLAND, Ore. — Among the 22 people arrested during a peaceful protest Aug. 30 outside of Immigration and Customs Enforcement offices in downtown Portland were seven faith leaders from the Oregon-Idaho Conference. The rally and sit-in was in protest of the continued detention of asylum-seekers at the Sheridan Federal Corrections Institution. Kristen Caldwell has the story.

South Georgia Conference
Letter calls for hope, kindness, unity

MACON, Ga. — In a season when The United Methodist Church is fraught with discord, distrust and dissension, more than 250 South Georgia clergy and laity have signed an online petition to demonstrate their commitment to unity. The letter says signers have differing convictions on human sexuality. Kara Witherow reports.

World Communion Sunday coming Oct. 7

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMCom) — World Communion Sunday, one of six churchwide Special Sundays in The United Methodist Church, will be Oct. 7 this year. The Sunday special offering raises funds for World Communion Sunday Scholarships, the Ethnic Scholarship Program and Ethnic In-Service Training Program.
