(UM News) — In her final address as Council of Bishops president, Bishop Cynthia Fierro Harvey urged as much unity as possible even as a new theologically conservative denomination plans to launch on May 1. Hispanic worship grows in South Dakota
MITCHELL, S.D. — Three Hispanic worshipping communities are blossoming in South Dakota. The newest, at Downtown First United Methodist Church in Mitchell, is the result of months of planning between the Rev. Keith Nelson of Downtown First and Herman Perez, a pastor who also leads Hispanic worshipping communities at United Methodist churches in Sioux Falls and Plankinton. Doreen Gosmire has the story.

Church strives to be more accessible
CHICAGO — A plan to make United Church of Rogers Park more accessible includes a new entrance, interior ramp and mechanical lift. Currently, the concrete steps leading to the front doors of the church are crumbling and unsafe and a ramp built 40 years ago no longer meets codes. The Uplift Accessibility Campaign still needs to raise $70,000 to cover the $300,000 cost. The Rev. Hope Chernich, co-pastor of the church, said the changes will have a spiritual impact on the community.

Path 1 trains and equips new church planters to start new congregations throughout the United States.

DAYTON, Ohio — The Susquehanna Conference’s Center for Spiritual Formation and the Bishop Bruce Ough Innovation Center at United Theological Seminary are teaming up to offer a two-year online training course for pastoral or lay leaders called to the ministry of spiritual direction. A webinar on the new course will be offered from 1 to 2:30 p.m. U.S. Eastern time April 28.
