Pastor reflects on abuses at Indian boarding schools
DOLORES, Colo. (UM News) — United Methodist Pastor Norman Mark has memories of abuse, isolation, a poor diet and having to fight for the entertainment of the staff at four Indian boarding schools he was forced to attend as a child. He is a much quieter man than he would be without that experience, and he says a U.S. Interior Department investigation into the schools is overdue. Jim Patterson has the story.

New webinar to tackle Asian bias
SAN FRANCISCO — Last October, Global Ministries' Asian American Language Ministry Plan, the New Federation of Asian American United Methodists and the Board of Church and Society teamed up to co-sponsor a webinar series called "Raise Up Your Voice Against Racism" with the goal of creating a safe space where Asian Americans and their allies can learn about and discuss racism. The next webinar in the series, "Racism and the Criminal Justice System," is set for 8 p.m. U.S. Eastern time Aug. 24. The Rev. John Oda has more on the monthly series and its impact.

Dillard professor named state poet laureate
NEW ORLEANS — Mona Lisa Saloy of United Methodist-related Dillard University has been named Louisiana's poet laureate. A chronicler of Black Creole culture, Saloy is the Conrad N. Hilton Professor of English at Dillard. She will serve as poet laureate for two years. Her poetry books include "Red Beans & Ricely Yours" and "Second Line Home: New Orleans Poems."

Leadership clinics available
WORTHINGTON, Ohio — Three live online leadership clinics are coming up in September through November, put together by Bishop Gregory Palmer. They include sessions with the Rev. Nadia Bolz-Weber, who was founding pastor of House for All Sinners and Saints in Denver; Beth Comstock, czar of innovation at General Electric; and Jemar Tisby, author and director of narrative and advocacy at the Center for Antiracist Research at Boston University. Cost for each clinic is $20 for Ohio and Illinois leaders, and $40 for other church leaders. A discounted package for all three clinics is also available.
