Churches damaged by Hurricane Laura

LAKE CHARLES, La. — The Louisiana and Texas conferences are assessing the effects of Hurricane Laura. The Louisiana Conference reported damage to some churches, with major damage to Lake Charles’ University United Methodist Church. “While the water was not as bad as what we had expected, the winds have had a devastating effect on the Lake Charles area and points along Laura’s path across Louisiana,” said Bishop Cynthia Fierro Harvey.

Families get back-to-school help from church

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Wesley United Methodist Church continued its eight-year tradition of handing out backpacks to families in need. To keep everyone safe this year amid COVID-19, the church created a drive-thru event and set up other safety protocols. More than 1,500 backpacks were distributed.

First woman chaplain for SMU

DALLAS — Southern Methodist University has selected the Rev. Lisa Garvin to be chaplain and minister to the university. She will begin Oct. 19 and will be the first woman to hold the job. Garvin, a United Methodist deacon, replaces the Rev. Steve Rankin, who served for 11 years.
