United Methodists organize peace caravan in Congo
TUNDA, Congo (UM News) — Leaders from the four episcopal areas of the Congo Central Conference gathered recently to assess the need for tribal peace in the region in order to strengthen evangelism. More than 500 clergy and laity participated in a reflection on the United Methodist Social Principles and how they relate to tribalism in the country. Philippe Kituka Lolonga reports.

Clergyman wins nomination for US Senate

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The Rev. Mark Holland, a United Methodist elder, won the Democratic Party nomination for a U.S. Senate seat from Kansas. He’ll face a Republican incumbent, Sen. Jerry Moran. Holland, 53, has led churches but also has been a mayor and county commissioner. He founded the group Mainstream UMC. David Burke reports.

Rosemary Brown is getting a reputation as the “Water Lady.” She has led a joint ministry venture with Monroe Street and Jordonia United Methodist churches to help vulnerable people in the Nashville area stay hydrated during intense heat waves. Asbury writings discovered

BALTIMORE — Writings by legendary Methodist Francis Asbury were discovered by an archivist for The United Methodist Church. The works, found in a manila folder that probably hasn’t been opened since the 1960s, include a “state of the denomination” speech. Archivist the Rev. Bonnie McCubbin said the notebook was written two days before Asbury’s death in 1816. Jonathan M. Pitts has the story.
