First United Methodist Latina sworn into US Congress
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UM News) — Rep. Delia Ramírez Hernández (D-Ill.) was sworn into the 118th U.S. Congress on Jan. 7, becoming its first United Methodist Latina. Ramírez Hernández, who grew up attending Humboldt Park United Methodist Church in Chicago, also has been a leader in the denomination. The Rev. Gustavo Vasquez reports.

Donor pays off debt for United Methodist faithful
CABOT, Ark. — After Arkansas Conference voters declined to ratify Cabot United Methodist Church’s disaffiliation, the church’s senior pastor and a part of the church’s membership withdrew from The United Methodist Church to start a new faith community and left those remaining United Methodist with building debt. The Arkansas Conference announced a gift from an anonymous donor to pay off the debt and help with funding a new pastor. Amy Ezell reports.

MACON, Ga. — United Methodists quickly answered the call to help when a pipe break during sub-freezing temperatures flooded a home at Wesley Glen, a United Methodist ministry serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis. — A representative of Emmanuel Community United Methodist Church said about 60% of the church’s electric power will soon come from solar panels on its roof. NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Every year, the United Methodist Higher Education Foundation awards more than $2 million in scholarships to students attending the more than 100 United Methodist-related colleges, universities and seminaries. These awards are separate from those offered by the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry. Applications are open through March 1.
