Congolese president donates car to Bishop Unda
 
KINDU, Congo (UM News) — In recognition of The United Methodist Church’s work in East Congo, the president of the country gifted a Nissan 4x4 vehicle to Bishop Gabriel Yemba Unda. The vehicle will help with efforts to evangelize in remote areas. Judith Osongo Yanga has the story.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — During the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, held Jan. 18-25, Christians everywhere are invited to remember one another in prayer and strengthen the bonds of love and mutual mission shared in Jesus Christ. Ask The UMC, a ministry of United Methodist Communications, has more on the annual observance, which is sponsored by the World Council of Churches and the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity.

California-Nevada Conference
As floods rise, United Methodists reach out

HALF MOON BAY, Calif. — California is continuing to deal with storms causing devastating floods, and it’s still too soon to assess the scope of the damage. But United Methodists are already doing what they can to help. When the Pilarcitos Creek flooded about 20 homes, United Methodist volunteers jumped into action to provide cleaning buckets. Steve Elliott, disaster response coordinator, reports.

Great Plains bishop plans road trips

TOPEKA, Kan. — Newly elected Bishop David Wilson, the first Native American bishop in The United Methodist Church, plans to visit many of the 1,000 churches he oversees in the Great Plains Conference, which includes all of Kansas and Nebraska. “Laypeople do so much, and that’s why I want to meet with them and see the incredible work they’re doing,” Wilson said. Rafael Garcia talks with Wilson about his upbringing and hopes for the future.

Pro-United Methodist group forms in Africa

NDOLA, Zambia — A group called the United Methodist Africa Forum has announced its launch, saying it is “committed to the unity and future of The United Methodist Church in Africa and around the globe.” Coordinators come from the South Africa, Zambia, Liberia and Mozambique South conferences. The group is planning to meet in South Africa in April.

United Women in Faith
Scholarship for lay women available
NEW YORK — The deadline to apply for the United Women in Faith National Scholarship for lay women is April 18. The scholarships are designed to be used for undergraduate or graduate study or student internships in religion or a related field such as social work. Preference will be given to people affiliated with The United Methodist Church and women involved with UWF. The average scholarship is $1,000, and the maximum is $5,000.
