United Methodist Publishing House to move
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) — The United Methodist Publishing House, a self-supporting church agency, plans to move to Nashville’s MetroCenter area of office parks in the first half of 2015. The agency bought the LakeFront Office Park in MetroCenter for $9.25 million. Florida-based Turnberry Associates has the current 3.7-acre publishing house headquarters site, across the street from Nashville’s new convention center, under contract. The Tennessean reports.
Women can be bishops, Church of England says
YORK, England (UMNS) — For the first time, the Church of England has voted to allow women to serve as bishops. In a statement, the British Methodist Church applauded the “courageous decision.”
Young adult commissioning set in Philippines
TAGAYTAY, Philippines (UMNS) — Forty-two young adults from 11 countries have gathered in the Philippines for training as Generation Transformation Global Mission Fellows. Their commissioning by the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries is set for 8 a.m. July 19 (8 p.m. ET July 18 in the United States).
United Methodists assist with Alaska flood rebuild
ANCHORAGE, (UMNS) — United Methodists are among the faith groups supporting volunteers who are helping rebuild communities hit by last year’s flooding and ice jams along the Yukon River. The host groups are partnering with the state of Alaska and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
History of Hymns: ‘Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me’
DALLAS (UMNS) — Michael Hawn writes that “Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me” falls in a long and rich tradition of hymns that draw upon the imagery of the sea to establish the relationship between the believer and Christ. The author of the hymn's text, Edward Hopper (1816-1888), was inspired by the accounts of Jesus quieting the storm. Hawn of Southern Methodist University’s Perkins School of Theology writes for the United Methodist Board of Discipleship.
NCC marks passing of former president
WASHINGTON (UMNS) — The National Council of Churches is paying tribute to Elenie Huszagh, the first Orthodox layperson and woman to serve as NCC president. The long-time Chicago attorney and prominent lay member of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America died July 11.
