Bishops amend what’s heading to GC2019
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Council of Bishops has amended its call for the 2019 special General Conference so that legislation comes from the Commission on a Way Forward — not the bishops. The bishops also delayed the release of the commission’s report because translations are not yet completed. Heather Hahn reports.

Haiti unrest strands mission teams

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) — Some U.S. mission groups, including at least three United Methodist teams, were stranded in Haiti after protesters took to the streets following a government-ordered fuel price increase. Teams from Providence United Methodist Church in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, reported they were told to “shelter in place.” Most teams expect to be able to leave Haiti in the next few days. Other teams include one from Chapin United Methodist Church in Chapin, South Carolina, and another from First United Methodist Church in Rockingham, North Carolina.

Big gift from Disney 

NEW ORLEANS — The Apex Youth Center, founded by the Rev. Lisa Fitzpatrick, a United Methodist pastor, has received a $25,000 donation from the Disney Dreamers Academy. The Rev. Todd Rossnagel has a video about the center’s work with disadvantaged kids and the surprise gift from Disney.

Rising from ashes with community support

REIDSVILLE, N.C. — Members of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church received an outpouring of local support when their 63-year-old church burned down on Feb. 20, 2015. Now the congregation, which has been meeting in the adjacent multipurpose structure saved by firefighters, will have a July 14 consecration service for a new $2.7 million sanctuary and education wing. Ann Fish reports.

Bishop Fairley found room at God’s table

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMC.org) — Louisville Area Bishop Leonard Fairley was born into poverty. “There were times when I didn’t have food,” he remembers. “There were tables that I knew I was not invited to. But there was always room at God’s table... I always knew that at this table there was always enough, that I was always welcome.” The Rev. Gathering at the river for 50 years 

CLANTON, Ala. — Every summer for the past 50 years, people have gathered for Sunday worship on the banks of Lake Mitchell. The River Church started as a way to draw boaters and lake-goers to worship. Clanton First United Methodist organizes the services from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
