Filipinos speak out against anti-terrorism bill

MANILA, Philippines (UM News) — Filipino United Methodists’ outcries against human rights violations have intensified during the coronavirus pandemic, including expressing outrage over the passage of a new anti-terrorism bill that one bishop said “will suppress our rights to protest and speak against evils of the society.” Gladys P. Black pastors speak out on Floyd killing 

TOPEKA, Kan. — Many Black Lives Matter statements and discussions have occurred recently in The United Methodist Church. Six African American pastors of the Great Plains Conference joined Todd Seifert, the conference’s director of communications, for a podcast about the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Flood cleanup continues in Michigan

GLADWIN, Mich. — United Methodist volunteers are working with other relief agencies to assess damage and help 6,000 households harmed by flooding after the Wixom Lake dam broke May 19. Homeowners are scrambling to beat the growth of mold and other damaging consequences, the leader of an Early Response Team reported.

Amid protests, meeting draws diverse leaders

NASHVILLE, Tenn. –– Amid protests related to the killing of George Floyd, leaders of United Methodist Men participated in a Zoom meeting of the Denominational Men’s Ministry Leadership Table, a group of some 20 leaders of men’s ministries that meet annually. Also on the call were leaders of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, the African Methodist Episcopal Church Zion and the Nazarene Church.

Panel discussion on crisis leadership

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Two United Methodist bishops will discuss ways clergy can lead during difficult times during a Facebook Live and YouTube event at 11 a.m. Central time on June 17. The discussion between Bishops Grant Hagiya and Kenneth Carter will be moderated by the Rev. Shannon Conklin-Miller of the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry.
