Aiding Nigerians displaced by violence

JALINGO, Nigeria (UM News) — Ten camps for internally displaced persons around Jalingo are sheltering people who have fled violence perpetrated by Boko Haram or conflicts involving groups such as the Fulani herdsmen. The Rev. Ande Emmanuel and Tim Tanton have the story.

United Methodist Publishing House
New hymnal on hold; other resources planned

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Work toward a new United Methodist Hymnal is on hold, given debates about the denomination’s future. The United Methodist Publishing House and Discipleship Ministries are instead planning a new United Methodist Worship Resources Collection, which will provide congregations expanded options in digital and print formats.

Clergyman apologizes for filing complaint
DES MOINES, Iowa (UM News) — The Rev. Heecheon Jeon has apologized for filing a complaint against the Rev. Anna Blaedel after she stated during an annual conference session that she was a “self-avowed practicing homosexual.” The Rev. Thomas Kim reports.

Inside or outside church, all can join this fight

DORTMUND, Germany — Retired United Methodist Bishop Rosemarie Wenner and the Rev. Jean Hawxhurst, ecumenical staff officer for the United Methodist Council of Bishops, were among those observing the “Thursdays in Black” campaign June 20 during the German Protestant church festival of Kirchentag. “Thursdays in Black and the fight against violence and rape is something everyone, men and women, in and outside of church can join. We are all affected by it,” Hawxhurst said.

Conference gives big to rebuild Texas church

CHILTON, Texas — At its recent annual gathering, the Central Texas Conference raised nearly $200,000 in gifts and pledges to help Mooreville United Methodist Church rebuild. The church’s 108-year-old sanctuary was lost to fire in February. Rissa Shaw reports.

Migrants get support from church agencies

ATLANTA — United Methodists are fulfilling their call to do service, ministry and advocacy by assisting some of the 68 million forcibly displaced people in the world. The United Methodist Committee on Relief, a ministry of United Methodist Global Ministries, has 22 active Global Migration grants totaling $2.7 million serving 218,539 projected beneficiaries.
