Ramping up response to US spring disasters

CLARKSVILLE, Mo. (UM News) — A small Missouri congregation has been feeding those trying to stop the mighty Mississippi from spilling over its banks, while a United Methodist pastor in Dayton, Ohio, is seeking justice along with disaster care for low-income tornado survivors. Meanwhile, the Arkansas Conference is training additional flood response volunteers “just in time.” Linda Bloom reports on how United Methodists are responding to U.S. disasters.

Cooperating on church growth in Africa 
LUBUMBASHI, Congo (UM News) — Lay and clergy members from the Zimbabwe Episcopal Area traveled to South Congo recently to exchange ministry ideas and strategies for church growth. While other parts of The United Methodist Church’s global connection are pondering separation, Zimbabwe lay leader Simon Mafunda said Africa is “forging cooperation and unity to preserve the heritage of true Methodism.” Chenayi Kumuterera has the story.

DALLAS — Oak Lawn United Methodist Church here is preparing to be a respite center for asylum seekers traveling by bus from the Texas-Mexico border. A first group of mothers, fathers and children should arrive June 8. They’re on their way to connect with sponsors while awaiting disposition of their asylum requests. Obed Manuel reports.

NEW YORK — United Methodist Women in the U.S. launched a nationwide paid parental leave campaign as it kicked off annual Mission u events. This year’s action campaign is paid family leave. Mission u will occur in more than 50 locations around the country from June through October 2019.
