Educator, delegate dies in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (UM News) — The Rev. Kongolo Clement Chijika, president of the Methodist University of Katanga in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and an elected delegate to General Conference, died April 12 after a brief bout with cancer. Jim Patterson has the story.

Remembering Bishop Carlton P. Minnick  

RALEIGH, N.C. — Retired United Methodist Bishop Carlton P. Minnick, 96, died on May 4. He was a pastor and district superintendent in the Virginia Conference, then an episcopal leader in Mississippi and North Carolina. He served a term as president of the Council of Bishops. In retirement, he was bishop-in-residence at Duke Divinity School. UM News is preparing a feature obituary.

Lundquist led General Council on Ministries

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — David Lundquist, a deeply involved layman of The United Methodist Church, has died at age 89. He served as top executive of the denomination’s General Council on Ministries from 1986 to 2000 and also served on the World Methodist Council executive board.

Program equips Korean pastors in cross-racial ministry
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UM News) — CRCC Madang is an enhanced and evolved program called to cultivate a new generation of Korean American United Methodist pastors who serve cross-racial appointments. The program is currently recruiting for its seventh class, which will convene Aug. 12-16 in Arlington Heights, Illinois, a Chicago suburb. The Rev. Thomas Kim has the story.

Bishops’ videos share hope after General Conference

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Bishop Tracy S. Malone, the new president of the Council of Bishops, and immediate past president Bishop Thomas J. Bickerton, share in a video why they see a bright future for The United Methodist Church. Also, 10 Western Jurisdiction bishops — five active and five retired — share a video reflection on the historic results of General Conference. They ground their message in the biblical account in Ezra of God’s people returning from the Babylonian diaspora.

Discipleship Ministries
Staff at The Upper Room cut

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Seven staff positions at The Upper Room are being eliminated due to financial challenges, the United Methodist Board of Discipleship Ministries has announced. The move, along with retirements, will save the agency $1.4 million annually. The Rev. Kimberly Orr, publisher of The Upper Room, announced earlier in the week that she was leaving. “These are difficult decisions necessary to ensure the long-term sustainability of The Upper Room’s ministries,” said Jeff Campbell, top executive of Discipleship Ministries. “We are committed to supporting all affected staff during this transition and are deeply grateful for their service.”
