Grants enrich outreach in East Africa

BUGEMBE, Uganda (UM News) — A United Methodist women’s training center, theological college and district motorcycle project have revved up their offerings thanks to a collaboration between UMC Ministries and Harper Hill Global. Together, they raised $13,000 to assist projects in the Uganda-South Sudan Conference. Gad Maiga has the story.

Women ‘Turn It Up’ at Assembly 2022

ORLANDO, Fla. — More than 3,000 gathered at the Orange County Convention Center and online for United Women in Faith’s Assembly 2022, held May 20-22. The event celebrating the work of the church’s women’s organization included speakers, workshops, town halls, worship and the consecration of deaconesses and home missioners. East Ohio Conference
Fire guts church’s sanctuary but not its spirit

COSHOCTON, Ohio — More than 70 firefighters on May 20 battled the flames shooting through the roof of Grace United Methodist Church’s 142-year-old sanctuary. While much of the building was severely damaged, the church’s spirit and sense of mission remain as vibrant as the church’s portrait of Jesus, which was untouched by the blaze. Rick Wolcott reports.

Michigan Conference
Tornado damage in Michigan

LANSING, Mich. — Disaster team leaders are assessing the damage from a tornado that struck Gaylord on May 20, and a $10,000 grant from the United Methodist Committee on Relief has been requested. Two people are confirmed dead and some businesses and homes are rubble as the relief effort gets underway.

Catholic feminist theologian found home at Garrett
 
EVANSTON, Ill. — Through her teaching, writing and activism over many years, Rosemary Radford Ruether had a big influence. She was a groundbreaking Catholic feminist theologian but taught from 1976 to 2002 at United Methodist Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, where she was the Georgia Harkness Professor of Applied Theology. Ruether died May 21 at age 85.

Bergquist receives honorary doctorate

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Rev. Greg Bergquist, top executive of the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry, has been awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Claremont School of Theology. Bergquist has served as an ordained clergyperson for 35 years and has led the agency since 2020.

Foundation for Evangelism
Foundation awards local church grants

LAKE JUNALUSKA, N.C. — The Foundation for Evangelism in June will award 31 grants totaling $230,000 to churches and organizations as part of the inaugural Equipping the Local Church Grant Cycle. Recipients come from four Wesleyan-tradition denominations: the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Church of the Nazarene and The United Methodist Church.
