California-Nevada Conference
Church art marks anniversary of Floyd's death

BERKELEY, Calif. — Ahead of the one-year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd, Epworth United Methodist Church unveiled an art installation honoring the lives of African Americans killed during their interactions with police. The art on display is the culmination of church members' research into the lives of 18 individuals. Merrie Bunt has the story.

Minnesota Conference
Conference hires racial justice organizer

MINNEAPOLIS — The Rev. Dana Neuhauser is joining the staff of the Minnesota Conference as its first racial justice organizer. Neuhauser's work will include teaching on anti-racism, providing training and resources for cross-racial and cross-cultural appointments, and offering support for clergy of color. The Rev. Cindy Gregorson, director of connectional ministries, said the new position aligns with the conference's vision to "engage in the work of justice and reconciliation." Karla Hovde has the story.

Chancellor helps conference with legal issues

LANSING, Mich. — The chancellor for the Michigan Conference says he has worked on more than 200 cases and given more than 500 opinions of legal issues facing the church. Attorney Andy Vorbrich has served 11 years as chancellor. Glenn M. Wagner has the story.

Bishop elected as endowment board chair

LOS ANGELES — Bishop Minerva G. Carcaño has been elected as the new chair of The California Endowment's governing board. Carcaño, who leads The United Methodist Church's California-Nevada Conference, has served on the board since 2015. The California Endowment is a private, statewide health foundation focusing on expanding access to quality health care for underserved people and promoting affordable improvements in the health of all Californians.

Bishops join in vaccines summit

WASHINGTON — United Methodist Bishops LaTrelle Easterling and Hope Morgan Ward will be among the faith leaders joining with Surgeon General Vivek Murthy and other officials to discuss how to support equitable and far-reaching vaccine distribution in the U.S. The Faiths4Vaccines National Summit will be online 1-4 p.m. U.S. Eastern time May 26.

Scholarships available for chaplaincy students

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The United Methodist Higher Education Foundation invites students preparing for chaplaincy in any branch of the U.S. military to apply for the Samuel Grover Powell Scholarship. Applicants must be enrolled at an accredited theological seminary and meet other requirements. The deadline to apply is July 1.
