Northern Illinois Conference
Conference approves 5% budget cut
MALTA, Ill. — The Northern Illinois Conference approved a 5% budget cut and apportionment formula changes during a special session Nov. 16. The conference also heard from the Exploration Team, a task force exploring a way forward for the conference that includes the possibility of new Methodist expression. The 2020 budget was $4,574,255, a reduction of about $288,000. The chair of the conference finance council said the 2019 General Conference resulted in “many of our churches losing members and along with that significant financial contributions.” Anne Marie Gerhardt reports.

Upper New York Conference
Churches step up for ʽpotato drops’
BOONVILLE, N.Y. — Boonville United Methodist Church recently was the distribution point for 45,000 pounds of potatoes, collected through gleaning by the ecumenical hunger relief group Society of St. Andrew. The society used other Upper New York Conference churches for fall “potato drops” benefiting food pantries. Betty Houg and Crystal Dauback report.

Church helps poor pay for health care in Congo
BUKAVU, Congo (UM News) — The United Methodist Church in Congo is helping make medical treatment more affordable for the country’s most vulnerable. Five Vulnerable Association of Savings and Credit offices have been set up at United Methodist health centers and hospitals to help members pay lower health care costs and work toward self-sufficiency.
