Top court to look at church disaffiliation rules

EVANSTON, Ill. (UM News) — An amended request from the Council of Bishops now asks the denomination’s top court to consider the implications of the General Conference Commission’s finding that four ineligible voters cast a ballot during votes on disaffiliation legislation. The amended request is part of the 18-item docket when the United Methodist Judicial Council meets Oct. 29-Nov.1. Linda Bloom reports.

Minnesota Conference
Purple scarves for GC2020

MINNEAPOLIS — Every person involved in the 2020 General Conference will get a purple scarf for comfort and as a symbol of the radical hospitality the Minnesota Conference intends to give to visitors. About 13,000 scarves were knitted by folks at more than 215 Dakotas and Minnesota churches. Christa Meland reports.

United Methodists building church in Dolný Kubín
DOLNÝ KUBÍN, Slovakia (UM News) — United Methodists were confused by a 2011 census that showed 33 people in the Slovakian town of Dolný Kubín who listed their religion as United Methodist. Nobody knew who they were and there had never been a Methodist congregation in the town near the border with Poland. But these days, the Rev. Patrick Hipp is building a congregation there. Urs Schweizer has the story.

North Texas Conference 
Conference plans relief effort after Dallas tornadoes 

PLANO, Texas — The North Texas Conference is organizing to help those affected by Oct. 20 tornadoes that destroyed homes, businesses and schools in and around Dallas. Walnut Hill United Methodist Church lost its steeple, and Christ’s Foundry United Methodist Mission also had storm damage.
