PITTSBURGH (UMNS) — As United Methodists responded to a deadly synagogue shooting, Bishop Cynthia Moore-Koikoi urged people to listen to God as they pray. United Methodists in the area immediately reached out to rabbis and synagogues to find out how they could help, while others attended vigils. Jim Patterson reports.

Court ruling propels GC2019 strategizing

Corrected link: Korea roundtable public events
ATLANTA (UMNS) — A story on the 2018 Roundtable for Peace on the Korean Peninsula, which will be hosted by the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries Nov. 9-11, contained a faulty registration link for public events that now has been fixed. Board opposes military at U.S.-Mexico border
WASHINGTON — A delegation from the United Methodist Board of Church and Society’s board of directors walked across the International Gateway Bridge to meet with men, women and children fleeing violence in their home countries. The bridge crosses the U.S.-Mexico border between Matomoros, Mexico, and Brownsville, Texas. After the trip during their meeting, the board adopted a statement opposing the decision by the U.S. government to send troops to the border in response to the group of migrants traveling through Mexico to try to reach the U.S.

Committee seeks liturgical resources
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The liturgical resources subgroup of the Hymnal Revision Committee seeks the submission of new materials for possible inclusion in the next United Methodist Hymnal. The committee particularly seeks worship resources for baptism, confirmation, renewal of baptism and days and seasons of the church year. Resources are requested between Nov. 1 and June 30.

Educators affirm commitment to church unity
JOHANNESBURG — United Methodist educational leaders meeting in Africa affirmed their commitment to church unity and established the Africa Senate, a body that will evaluate and support the development of Methodist education in a Pan-African perspective. Delegates to a joint meeting of the African Association of Methodist Institutions of Higher Education and the African Association of United Methodist Theological Institutions voted on the creation of the Africa Senate and established a committee that will implement the new body. The United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry is a partner in this initiative.
