Bishop Machado, father figure and revered leader, dies
KINSHASA, Congo (UM News) — Retired Bishop João Somane Machado of the Mozambique Area is being remembered as a father figure with an infectious laugh who contributed immensely to the growth of The United Methodist Church in Africa and globally. Machado died Oct. 25 at the age of 77. Eveline Chikwanah reports.

Baltimore-Washington Conference
Church to build housing as act of faith and justice

SILVER SPRING, Md. — Over the past several months, Silver Spring United Methodist Church began a discernment process to discover “how God is calling them to show up and serve the community.” In June, the congregation voted to renovate the church building and build a substantial affordable housing complex, with more than 60 units, on the church’s property. Social justice passion sparked holy friendship

AUSTIN, Texas — Wesleyan Impact Partners’ "Igniting Imagination" podcast has a series about holy friendships. In the latest episode, the Revs. Matt Russell and Cleve V. Tinsley IV share with host the Rev. Lisa Greenwood how their friendship formed through a shared passion for social justice. Russell is on staff at Chapelwood United Methodist Church in Houston and Tinsley leads the Center for African American History and Culture at Virginia Union University.

St. Paul & St. Andrew United Methodist Church 
Sacred Places grant boosts New York church

NEW YORK — St. Paul & St. Andrew United Methodist Church has qualified for a $250,000 grant from the National Fund for Sacred Places, a program of Partners for Sacred Places in collaboration with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Rev. K Karpen, senior pastor, said the grant “gives us a tremendous boost towards restoring our 125-year-old building” and offers recognition of the church’s role in making a difference in its community.
