Native American artist graces church with mural

DALLAS — A 20-by-25-foot mural is taking shape at Dallas Indian United Methodist Church. Damon Neal, a young Native American artist, accepted the assignment from the Rev. J.B. Jackson. Neal, who in recent months lost his father to a heart attack and a brother to COVID-19, says working on the mural has been a form of prayer for him. The Rev. Katie Dawson’s book “All Earth Is Waiting” helped inspire and direct the project. Monica Frazier reports.

Missouri Conference
NOMADS take mission work on the road

COLUMBIA, Mo. — The Missouri Conference is a good place to find the highly mobile United Methodist volunteers known as Nomads on a Mission Active in Divine Service, or NOMADS. The Rev. Max Marble, former director of the Missouri Conference’s Office of Creative Ministries, is a relatively new NOMAD. He’s driving the U.S. in a Volkswagen camping van to help with work projects. Fred Koenig reports.

Creator of ‘Wooly Willy’ toys dies at 93

SMETHPORT, Pa. — James Reese "Jim" Herzog created the famous "Wooly Willy" magnetic toy and was the oldest member of the United Methodist Church of Smethport. Herzog, a Sunday school teacher and trustee, died Sept. 29 at age 93. The Bradford Era has his obituary.

Applicants sought for mission program

ATLANTA — Adults ages 20 to 30 are invited to apply for a two-year assignment with the Global Mission Fellows program. Those selected will leave their home state and serve two years in a U.S. community facing issues such as food insecurity, immigration and poverty. The fall application deadline is Nov. 30.

South Carolina Conference
Pastor among those arrested in protest

WASHINGTON — The Rev. Amiri Hooker, a pastor in the South Carolina Conference, writes about the Poor People’s Campaign march in the U.S. capital. Hooker was among the faith leaders arrested as part of the nonviolent moral direct action aimed at urging the U.S. Senate to act on legislation to protect voting rights, reform immigration and raise the federal minimum wage. “I am clergy — and I need to have faith and act,” Hooker writes.
