TALENT, Ore. — People who lost everything in the Oregon wildfires are showing up to help their neighbors, said the Rev. Brent Strobel, pastor of Ashland United Methodist Church. The fire swept through the towns of Phoenix and Talent on Sept. 8, damaging more than 3,200 homes and causing at least three deaths. Sally Blanchard reports.

Children die from unsafe water, poor sanitation
Coming Tuesday, Oct. 13: The World Health Organization reports that over 800 children under 5 die every day from diarrhea diseases due to poor sanitation, poor hygiene or unsafe drinking water. Staff photographer Mike DuBose, with reporting help from Kathy L. Gilbert, chronicles the scarcity of clean water access in rural Africa and the church’s efforts to help in a photo essay called “Water is Life.”
