Celebrating Asbury’s impact on 2 shores 
BRISTOL, England (UM News) — The 250th anniversary of Francis Asbury’s crossing of the Atlantic from England to America is being celebrated jointly by the Methodist Church of Britain and The United Methodist Church. Though virtually unknown in England, Asbury went on to build the Methodist movement in America and became one of the first two bishops of what is today The United Methodist Church. Tim Tanton reports.

Reyes, jurist for nation and church, dies 
MANILA, Philippines (UM News) — Justice Ruben T. Reyes served on both the Supreme Court of the Philippines and the top court of The United Methodist Church. Fellow United Methodists remember Reyes, who died Sept. 13 at age 82, for his meticulousness, broad legal knowledge and passion for prayer. Heather Hahn has the obituary.

Western North Carolina Conference
Congregation ‘burns the burden’ of medical debt
FRANKLIN, N.C. — First United Methodist Church held a campaign, Burn the Burden, to help alleviate medical debt for families in its region. Through the fundraising, the congregation was able to help 2,837 families in North Carolina, northeastern Georgia and eastern Tennessee. The church recounts its story.

Church offers back-to-school haircuts 
HUMBLE, Texas — Journey of Faith United Methodist Church joined with Clarity Cuts, a local barbershop, to provide free haircuts to children returning to school. “It’s been so cool to watch this, to see the children step out of the chair with fresh smiles on their faces,” said the Rev. Stephen Goldsmith, pastor. Lindsay Peyton reports.

PEARISBURG, Va. — Particularly in the American South, people of a certain age love fried pies — handheld, fruit-filled treats similar to turnovers. First United Methodist Church of Pearisburg has maintained a fried-pie tradition for some 40 years. Annette Spence reports on the ministry and includes the church’s recipe for fried apple pies.

NEW YORK — The Texas law banning abortions after the sixth week of pregnancy will harm poor and marginalized women, United Methodist Women said in a statement. Women and families should have “access to the full range of reproductive health care, with the guidance the church provides,” the statement said.
