Faith leaders call for release of United Methodist
WASHINGTON — The Baltimore-Washington Conference bishop, the top executive of the United Methodist Board of Church and Society and other faith leaders called for the immediate release of Binsar Siahaan. Siahaan, an undocumented Indonesian immigrant who is a member and caretaker of Glenmont United Methodist in Silver Spring, Maryland, was arrested on church property by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. “As a bishop … I find this breach of established practice unconscionable. How dare they enter upon our sacred grounds to violate their own policy,” Bishop LaTrelle Easterling said at a news conference on Sept. 21. Erik Alsgaard reports.

Bill Fore, religious broadcaster, dead at 92
DALLAS — The Rev. William F. Fore, a United Methodist minister from the California-Pacific Conference, played a key role in the founding of public broadcasting in the U.S. Fore, former president of the World Association for Christian Communication, died July 30 at the age of 92. He was involved in film and television ministries as staff of the United Methodist Board of Missions (now Global Ministries) and the National Council of Churches.

Rev. James Lawson Day declared
LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles County has declared Sept. 22 “The Rev. James M. Lawson Jr. Day” to honor the retired United Methodist pastor and civil rights leader. Lawson, who trained civil rights workers in nonviolent protesting, will celebrate his 92nd birthday that day.
