What’s the difference between apostle and disciple?
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — There are two different Greek words involved: Disciple (mathetes) means “learner” or “student,” while Apostle (apostellein) means “one who has been sent out.” Ask The UMC, a ministry of United Methodist Communications, has more on the subject, including how the terms relate to today’s bishops.

Bishop Carter: The church ‘was an anchor’
LAKELAND, Fla. (UMC.org) — Bishop Kenneth H. Carter, the new Council of Bishops president and leader of the Florida Conference, came to The United Methodist Church after a family friend’s invitation. He talks about the start of his ministry as an inner-city youth leader, his love of baseball and the importance of Sabbath with the Rev. Joe Iovino as part of the Get Your Spirit in Shape series.

Methodist bishop, ecumenist dies in Pakistan
MULTAN, Pakistan — Bishop John Victor Samuel, 87, an ordained Methodist minister and one of the pioneers of the Church of Pakistan, died Aug. 30. The first Pakistani bishop of the Methodist Church, Samuel was remembered by the World Council of Churches as a committed ecumenical leader and “a loving and wise peacemaker.”

University Senate sets deadline for Bethune-Cookman
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. —The United Methodist Church’s University Senate has set a Sept. 15 deadline for Bethune-Cookman University to provide specific information to the denomination’s accrediting body. Bethune-Cookman’s former president resigned abruptly in 2017 and was subsequently sued by the school, which alleged he and other former administrators defrauded the university of millions. T.S. ‘Coffee guy’ perks up about fair trade mission
OKLAHOMA CITY — There's a ritual of sorts held every second Sunday morning at Quail Springs United Methodist Church. That's when Dave Ranek, known as “The Coffee Guy,” and his United Methodist Men sidekick, Ron Osborn, set up a long table to peddle fair trade coffees, teas, chocolate bars and other products to help send kids of incarcerated parents to camp; buy school supplies for needy neighborhood students; feed hungry families at holiday time and minister to the homeless. Paula Burkes reports.
