Preventing overdose deaths gives God's people a second chance

Ahead of International Overdose Awareness Day on Aug. 31, an addiction medicine physician points to our Wesleyan roots of caring for those who struggle with substance abuse.

Hope, care and a way forward

Compassion was in short supply outside the abandoned church in Ocala, Florida. Now under the leadership of the Rev. Jill Beck, the building houses Compassion United Methodist Church — a safe haven for women battling addictions or fleeing abusive situations.

Being a pastor abusing drugs or alcohol is a hard life, with shame and deceit as constant companions. The Rev. C. Don Jones of the Holston Conference made it through and is sharing his story in a new book.
